Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
